What is an Insurance
Broker?
Unlike the insurance agents and
insurance agencies, the broker legally represents YOU, the client.
Another major difference is that
typically, the insurance company shares their profit with the insurance
agencies as a way to encourage them to take steps to reduce or minimize the
level of claims that are paid each year.
Though many agents and agencies
purport to be "independent", they are referring to the fact that they own
their business and that they represent two or more insurance companies, not
just one.
Though they may be independent,
their loyalty lies with the insurance company, while the broker works for
you.
In contrast, a broker does not
typically share in the insurance company's profits and has no loyalty to the
insurance company. A broker's loyalty lies completely with YOU, the client.
In many cases, insurance agents
will provide a list of the insurance company's that they represent. If they
have such a list, then you know they are acting on behalf of those insurance
companies.
